I'm not sure. I don't think we're going to see the death of the print book anytime soon. I also think that the 'killer app' for the ebook isn't the tech that's around at the moment; I have a Sony Reader (because last year when I bought mine, the Kindle was US-only; thanks, Amazon) and it's OK. Only OK. Gripes: B&W screen, incredibly slow refresh rate, poor contrast screen, having to switch it off during plane descent. Pluses: I can carry work reading and pleasure reading around in one package.

I travelled last week, and carried my netbook, my Reader and a camera. Instead of all three, I want a decent bit of tech that does it all - good camera, good music player, wireless, good colour screen and decent battery life. And lightweight. And wireless charging.

Until folk can buy portable things that 'do it all', books are safe. I reckon.

"Achievement might come in the form of a paid blogging gig, collaborating with other geeks, or simply submitting articles to sites that pay."

Or also by donations/virtual tip jar as well? I'm not sure if that's something that you could ever count on, but I sort of get the feeling that the "thank artists and writers with your dollars" movement is building steam.

Amanda Palmer, a really interesting performer, has some recent blogs about the subject that might be food for thought:

the follow-up to that one:

I miss you, Ainsley! Sending hugs your way, & some for Simon too.

I never thought I'd get an e reader, but I drank the Kindle Kool Aid and I have to admit that it is by far one of my favorite pieces of technology. I'm actually trying authors I never would have before, because the books are so much less expensive. And for someone who spends a lot of time traveling, and also, waiting around for shit/people?doctors, it sure is easier to do with the Kindle than it was with the library I had to carry around.

Still buy books from my favorite authors and my friends who are authors, though. :-)
